history

The new greenhouses

The botanical garden was laid out in 1890 as a school garden on the Hardt and in 1910, due to lack of space, it was moved to the nearby site of the Ellersche Villa. Since December 1993, the Botanical Garden has not only been maintained by the city of Wuppertal, but also supported by the newly founded "Association of Friends and Patrons of the Botanical Garden Wuppertal".

As part of the Regionale 2006 , three new greenhouses were built on the former site of the city nursery as an extension of the botanical garden, a large demonstration greenhouse with around 400 m² and two smaller ones with around 100 m² each.

The demonstration greenhouse on the south side mainly houses tropical crops. The north side of the house with approx. 250 m² is used in summer as an exhibition and event area, in winter it is used to overwinter plants. In the two smaller greenhouses there are special collections of bulbs and tubers as well as cacti.

The entire facility of the "New Hardt Garden" on an area of 3.6 hectares was opened to the public on May 5, 2007.

deals

Botanical aspects and ecological contexts are conveyed on guided tours through the garden. The plant advice service, which is offered all year round on the 1st Wednesday of the month, is gladly accepted by many people seeking advice. There are also offers for children and families, seminars, exhibitions, lectures and other events.

Directions

The garden is best reached on foot via the road and stairway connections leading to the Hardt or with the inner-city minibus line 643, as the few parking spaces in the vicinity are completely overcrowded, especially in the summer months. However, in 2008 the parking lot was expanded.
