Hermann J. Mahlberg

Hermann Josef Mahlberg (born April 7, 1938 in Cologne - Lindenthal ) is a German painter , graphic artist , sculptor and emeritus professor for art education .

Life

Hermann J. Mahlberg passed his Abitur in March 1958 at the Cologne high school Kreuzgasse . He began his studies at the University of Cologne with the subjects German , philosophy and art history in the same year. After one semester, he switched to the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf and studied art teaching under Otto Coester , Kurt Arnscheidt and Günther Grote until 1962. In Cologne he studied German studies, geography and art history from 1960 to 1963 and from 1960 to 1961 he attended the workshop for teachers of the City of Cologne trained as a works teacher .

From 1962 to 1970 Mahlberg was employed as an art teacher at various grammar schools in the Rhineland , including Bedburg , Dormagen- Knechtsteden and Düsseldorf . From 1962 to 1974 Mahlberg worked part-time as a lecturer in adult education and gave artistic courses, art-historical lectures and excursions. From 1968 to 1971 he also worked part-time as a lecturer in art with a focus on graphics at the state educational institute in Leverkusen .

As a research assistant at the seminar for art and craft education under Wilhelm Ebert , Mahlberg was employed in Wuppertal at the Pädagogische Hochschule Rheinland, department Wuppertal from 1970 to 1973. In the meantime, the Wuppertal Comprehensive University (from 2003 Bergische Universität Wuppertal ) was founded and began teaching in 1972, the Pedagogical University and other universities were included in the comprehensive university. At the same time Mahlberg was doing his doctorate at the University of Cologne in the subjects of art history (with Heinz Ladendorf and Günther Binding ), geography with a focus on settlement geography (with Otto Friedrich Timmermann) and education (with Clemens Menze and Hans Hermann Groothoff). With the art history dissertation : The architect and sculptor Johann Georg Leydel. A contribution to the architectural history of the Rhine in the 18th century. doctorate Mahlberg 1973 Dr. phil.

In the same year he was appointed as professor of art education at the Dusseldorf Art Academy appointed . In 1974 he was appointed professor to the chair for art education at the Pädagogische Hochschule Rheinland , Neuss department. When the college of education was closed, Mahlberg moved to the University of Düsseldorf in the same position. In 1984/1985 he was transferred to the comprehensive university in Wuppertal, where he was given the chair for art education.

He took over the management of the Research Center for Architectural History and Monument Preservation at the comprehensive university that he founded in 1986. In the 1990s he was dean of Faculty 5 at the comprehensive university (today Faculty F).

Hermann J. Mahlberg is retired and lives in Wuppertal- Elberfeld . Together with his former student Hella Nussbaum, he has written several books on the architecture of Wuppertal.

Leydel research

In his dissertation the architect and sculptor Johann Georg Leydel. A contribution to the architectural history of the Rhine in the 18th century , Hermann J. Mahlberg dealt in detail with the Leydel architectural dynasty in the Rhineland (1740 to 1850). The places of activity were places like Aachen , Ahrweiler , Bad Godesberg , Bergisch Gladbach , Bonn , (Düsseldorf-) Kaiserswerth , Elberfeld, Cologne , (Cologne-) Mülheim , Krefeld , Monschau , Neuss and Ratingen . Mahlberg tried cross-connections from Johann Georg Leydel (1721–1785), Michael II Leydel (1749–1782) and Michael III Leydel (1760–1841) to the landscape gardeners Johann Cunibert Lenné (1714–1787), Peter Joseph Lenné (1756–1821) and Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe (1775–1846). In 1973 he received the Paul Clemen Prize from the Rhineland Regional Council for this dissertation .

Artistic activity

Mahlberg works as a painter, graphic artist and sculptor. Works by him were shown in a joint exhibition "Art in the Villa" 2009 in Wuppertal. His works of Tango Cycle 2 were exhibited in Cracow in 2004 alongside works by Polish artists.

Works

From 1970 Mahlberg was the author of numerous articles in art education journals, including the journals Bildnerische Erbildung and Kunst + Studium . As co-editor from 1990 to 2000 and author of articles up to 1998 on topics of architectural history and monument preservation, he was involved in the Polis, a magazine for architecture, urban planning and monument preservation .
