The Velbert-Leberhof stop is one of four stations on the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Velbert . The stop is in the Kidneyhof district .

history

In 1831 the station area at the Leberhof was the end point of the Deilthaler coal railway , which was operated by the first German railway company (founded in 1828 by Friedrich Harkort , among others , later renamed the Prinz-Wilhelm-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft ) on the Deilbach from Leberhof to Hinsbeck as a transport route for the coal mines in Deilbachtal (including the mine in Kidneyhof) was trassed. The small railway with iron rails of 820 mm gauge was supposed to be steam powered, which would have made it the first steam railway line in Germany. The concession to operate steam was initially not granted by the district government, although successful test drives took place. After the opening by Prince Wilhelm of Prussia on September 20, 1831, the railway was initially operated as a horse-drawn railway, and sporadic passenger traffic began soon afterwards. With the extension to Steele and Vohwinkel , begun in 1844 and completed in 1847 , the railway was converted to standard gauge and steam powered. This year, the last stop at Kidneyhof was converted into a through station with signal box and reopened.

The station was the only train stop of the Niederbonsfeld municipality , which was independent until 1926 and to which Leberhof belonged at the time. The Deilbach flows through the village and historically divides the Rhineland from Westphalia . The center of Kidneyhof was in Westphalia, but the train station was on the western side of the stream in Vossnacken in the Rhineland. In addition to a siding for general cargo at the station, there was an industrial track that led from the station along the Deilbach, but in contrast to the main line west of the river, to a brickworks about 900 meters away . Until the middle of the 20th century, tram line 17 of Bergische Kleinbahn AG passed the station, which ran from Wuppertal - Elberfeld to Essen - Steele, mostly parallel to the railway line.

The station building, a slated two-storey half-timbered building with a saddle roof, housed a waiting room, a service room and a station restaurant on the ground floor, as well as a service apartment on the upper floor. The building was demolished in 1972. The immediately adjacent signal box and gatekeeper house was demolished in 1991. Since then, there has been a parking lot in place of these buildings.

Location and structure

The stop now only consists of two platforms, which are located directly at a level crossing. The S-Bahn line S 9 runs every 20 minutes towards Essen or Wuppertal . There is a bus stop directly at the stop, which is served by a bus line from the Velbert local bus . In addition, the Velbert-Leberhof bus station, from which numerous regional bus routes run to the surrounding area, is 300 meters from the train stop.

service

The S-Bahn stop is served by line S 9 of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr . It takes 17 minutes to get to the Essen main train station and 29 minutes to the Wuppertal main train station .
