The Straubing station is the station of the Lower Bavarian city of Straubing . It is located on the Regensburg – Passau and Straubing – Bogen railway . The station belongs to category 3 of DB Station & Service and has five platform tracks. Other stops in the city are the Straubing Ost and Ittling stops on the Gäubodenbahn .

3600 travelers and visitors and 94 trains are counted every day.

location

Straubing train station is located south of the city center, which can be reached via Bahnhofstrasse or Kolbstrasse. Landshuter Straße runs west of the train station, with an underpass under the track system. The Gäubodenpark shopping center is in the immediate vicinity . An extension of the passenger underpass connecting the platforms with the house platform to Gäubodenpark was requested by citizens, but was not implemented during the station renovation.

history

The Bavarian Eastern Railway , founded in 1856, built the Landshut – Straubing line in 1859 as part of the royal approved development of Eastern Bavaria, along with other lines. This 57 km long route via Geiselhöring was the continuation of the Munich – Landshut route opened a year earlier and fulfilled the intention of the Bavarian Eastern Railways "[...] to build and operate the railways [...] from Munich via Landshut to the Danube , [...] " . When it opened on December 12, 1859, Straubing was the provisional final stop and the station was used as a terminus. The Straubing – Plattling – Passau line was opened as early as September 20, 1860, making it possible to connect the Bavarian Eastern Railway with the Empress Elisabeth Railway . With the Straubing – Sünching line, a direct connection to Regensburg was created from 1873 onwards. Construction of the Straubing – Miltach railway began later . In 1895 a section to Bogen was completed, in 1896 to Konzell and in 1905 the construction of the line to Miltach was completed. The expansion of the routes increased the number of passengers in Straubing station, which is why the waiting rooms in the station building have meanwhile been enlarged and a platform has been built on track 5. A further expansion of the station, goods handling and loading hall was completed in 1898.

Signal box in Straubing

In 1899, a central signal box was put into operation in Straubing station. This was in use for almost 60 years before it was replaced by a pushbutton interlocking in 1958 .

Ceremony on the occasion of the electrification of the Regensburg – Passau line in 1959

In 1959, the year of the station's centenary, the electrification of the Regensburg – Passau railway line was completed. This was celebrated with a ceremony at Straubing train station, among other places.

From 1965 to 1967 the station buildings and ancillary facilities were modernized. Another renovation of the reception building with redesign of the forecourt took place in the 1990s. Extensive restructuring of the train station restaurant and train station bookshop was also carried out. In 2009 the 150th anniversary of the Straubing train station was celebrated. In addition to a station festival, a special exhibition took place in the Gäubodenmuseum , which illuminated the history of the station in detail.

Between 2017 and 2020, the station was expanded to make it accessible. The measures included the new construction of the three platforms with canopies, the new construction of the pedestrian underpass together with the installation of elevators and the equipping with a guidance system for the blind.

Infrastructure

The station has five tracks on three platforms . Track 1 is on the house platform . Most trains of the Gäubodenbahn in the direction of Bogen stop here , while the trains in the opposite direction to Neufarn (Lower Bavaria) use platform 2. The agilis and Intercity trains in the direction of Regensburg stop at platform 3 ; on track 4 the agilis and the Intercity in the direction of Plattling . From track 5 there are also a few trains to Regensburg, Parsberg and Bogen. All platforms are covered and actually connected to the main platform via a pedestrian underpass .

There are also several parking and loading tracks, some of which are only connected to the east (Bogen / Plattling).

On the street side at the train station there are taxi ranks and bus stops for city and regional buses.

Barrier-free renovation

Temporary pedestrian crossing at Straubing train station for the duration of the construction work.

Local politicians and interest groups have been calling for a barrier-free expansion of the station for several years. The renovation was carried out as part of the BayernPackage between 2017 and 2020 and is expected to cost 20.1 million euros. The measure was carried out in sections in order to be able to maintain the operation of the station and the line.

"Construction phase 1" started in March 2017, during which some preliminary work was done, including the construction of a temporary pedestrian crossing over the tracks. In July 2017, with "construction phase 2", work began on the house platform and track 1, which had already been taken out of service when the timetable was changed in December 2016. The platform was renewed with a platform height of 55 centimeters, at the same time the underpass was renovated and the platform roof renewed. In September 2017, a 79-year-old woman fell on the temporary pedestrian overpass and died as a result of the accident. The construction of this pedestrian crossing had already been criticized several times before, because due to the height of 50 steps and the lack of elevators, crossing the bridge was very difficult and especially difficult for older people or passengers with luggage. The construction work on the house platform was completed as scheduled on February 18, 2018. By June 2019, platforms B (tracks 2 and 3) and C (tracks 4 and 5) were also completed to the point where track closures were no longer necessary. The pedestrian underpass was provisionally completed and opened at the end of May so that the controversial construction site overpass could be dismantled by the end of June. The elevators have been in operation since the end of January 2020. In the course of the construction work, a guidance system for the blind and elevators were installed on all platforms to create barrier-free access.

After the signal box has been completely dismantled, the station will be completed in construction phase 7.

After it became known that the affected trains would not stop in Plattling for the stop in Straubing, the test operation was heavily criticized in advance.
