Location of Ohligsmühle in Wuppertal

The location of Ohligsmühle ( Ohligsmöhle = Low German name for oil mill ) in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal goes back to a former water mill on the Wupper . The mill existed there until 1870.

Today the suspension railway station of the Wuppertal suspension railway, built in 1982, is named after this location. This station represents a reconstruction of the Alexanderbrücke suspension railway station a few meters away, which was destroyed in World War II.

history

The mill was first mentioned in 1657 as a coating mill for the production of cotton linters. The mill was used as an oil mill in 1688 and as a flour mill in 1867 . In 1853 yarn was bleached on the banks of the Wupper near Ohligsmühle. The areas for this were 1 acre , 37 rods and 60 feet in size .

When Bundesallee was built in 1954, on November 22, 1960, the street names Ohligsmühler Straße (from April 2, 1901: Ohligsmühle ), which was a section from Alexanderstraße to Wupper, as well as Ohligsmühler Platz and Ohligsmühler stairs were no longer available.

At the end of 2011, construction work began on the former parking lot between the suspension railway station and Bundesallee. A modern office and business complex has been created on the entire site. In October 2013 the popular gastronomy chain Vapiano opened its first restaurant in Wuppertal. Among other things, the Wuppertal branch of Apobank is located here .

In the course of the renovation of the Döppersberg , Bundesstraße 7 at the main train station was closed on July 21, 2014 and the bus station there closed. The Ohligsmühle stop (main station) was set up in Ohligsmühle . It takes over a large part of the bus station function until the new bus station is expected to go into operation in 2018.
