history
Construction of the plant began in 1900. It was dissolved as an independent agency in 1992.
The plant was used by Deutsche Bahn until 1999 and sold in November 2003. The 'Bahnbetriebswerk Krefeld Betriebs-GmbH & Co. KG' has been the owner of the Bahnbetriebswerk since January 1, 2004; a service center for railway vehicles is housed in the buildings. The "Stiftung Historisches Bahnbetriebswerk Krefeld" and a support association are responsible for maintaining and maintaining the facility.
Because of its importance for the history of the city, it was added to the list of monuments by the city of Krefeld . It is the last surviving depot in the Rhineland, which illustrates the construction of such plants between the beginning of the 20th century and the First World War .
Operating facilities
The plant's facilities are located on Dießemer Strasse on the side of the main line towards Cologne and Duisburg. It is connected to the passenger station in such a way that all platform tracks can be approached directly via switch connections.
The 19- person ring locomotive shed in brick construction has a pent roof with skylight on the side of the track and two-winged rectangular access gates . The shed tracks are equipped with work pits. The access to the shed is via a 23 m turntable in welded construction, which was installed after the Second World War . In addition to the roundhouse there is a four-track, rectangular railcar hall that can be reached via a track harp.
The steam locomotives were coaled using a high-lying lintel platform with its own access track for the delivery of coal. The slagging took place in a slag pit next to the coaling plant. The sanding system with the storage building is no longer functional today.
