Meerholz is a district of the district town of Gelnhausen in the East Hessian Main-Kinzig district .

Meerholz is located on the southeastern edge of the Wetterau in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse. The village, 4 km southwest of the main town, has a train station called Hailer-Meerholz on the Kinzig Valley Railway . The sequoia sea wood is also known.

history

From January 1, 2007 to June 30, 2013 the geographic center of the EU was exactly at 50 ° 10 ′ 21 ″  N , 9 ° 9 ′ 0 ″  E in the southernmost part of Meerholz: in the middle of a field at the foot of the "Niedermittlauer Heiligenkopf" . On January 26, 2007, the Hessian European Minister Volker Hoff symbolically hoisted a flag of the European Union . After that this center was in the Bavarian Westerngrund .

The village was first mentioned on September 14, 1173, when it came to border regulations between the Selbold monastery and the town of Meerholz.

In the north-east of the local area is the Meerholz Castle on the site of a former monastery (reconstruction after 1564). Today there is a nursing home in the building .

1 July 1974 at sea timber was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse powerful state law in the city of Gelnhausen incorporated .
