history

Wendelinus Chapel - the oldest building in Höchst

On July 1, 1974, Höchst was incorporated into the city of Gelnhausen. In 976 it was mentioned for the first time under the name "Hosti" and in 1976 it celebrated its 1000th anniversary. In 1313 his name was "Hoechste" and in 1582 "Hoegste". There are no reliable data on the number of inhabitants at the time of the first mention. On the basis of the court book drawn up in 1582, 25 hearths with 123 souls were registered. After this time Höchst was pledged several times and with the handover of the documents to the Elector and the Archbishopric in Mainz, the last seizure in history ended on May 28, 1721.

In 1415 the inhabitants of the village built a chapel - probably out of gratitude because they were spared a serious cattle disease in the area - and dedicated it to Saint Wendelin. Completely destroyed by the Thirty Years' War , which, like everywhere else, left its mark, the chapel was rebuilt in 1702. At the same time, a cemetery was laid out around the chapel. In April 1811, the Spessart robber Georg Philipp Lang, alias Holzlips , tried to steal the bell from the chapel. After he failed, Holzlips threw the altarpieces on the floor and damaged a statue of St. Wendelinus.

But even in the last days of the Second World War in 1945, Höchst was hit by dire events: On Easter Sunday, the returning Höchst, who had initially sought protection in the forest, were presented with a sad picture: 8 completely burned out houses, 28 heavy and 40 light Damaged houses and eleven barns and stables were also destroyed after American tanks broke a final resistance by German soldiers in the Höchst Kinzigau. Reconstruction began in the years that followed.

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , Höchst became the fifth district of Gelnhausen by virtue of state law on July 1, 1974.
