history
The Verbandsgemeinde Unkel was created on October 1, 1968 in the course of the Rhineland-Palatinate functional and territorial reform from the coincident mayor of Unkel, which has existed since 1816 (since 1927 "Amt Unkel"). As part of a regional reform passed by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in 2010, the municipalities of Linz am Rhein and Bad Hönningen were asked to merge based on their population (less than 12,000 inhabitants in the VG Bad Hönnigen), and the municipality of Unkel announced that it would also participate in one Merger with the announced VG Linz-Bad Hönningen to be interested. A decision should be made in 2019.

The blazon reads: “Under a silver shield head, inside a green diagonal wave bar, split by red and gold. In front two slanted golden keys with turned away beards, angled by four silver hexagons; behind a red bunch of grapes with two green leaves. "
The wavy bar indicates the location on the Rhine. A wave bar is also shown in the Rheinbreitbach coat of arms. The Peter key and the hexagonal stones are taken from the coat of arms of the city of Unkel. The Petrus keys are also depicted in the Erpel coat of arms. The red grape symbolizes the cultivation of wine in the community area, especially the Unkeler red wine. A bunch of grapes is also shown in the coat of arms of Bruchhausen. Legally valid since September 21, 1949.
