Sten Sandell (* 1958 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish pianist, keyboardist and composer of free jazz and European improvisation music .

Life

Sandell studied piano with Mats Persson and Carl-Axel Dominique from 1976 to 1986, improvisation / composition with Sven-David Sandstrom, and electro-acoustic music with Par Lindgren. From 1981 to 1984 he studied at the Music Academy in Stockholm. The influences of his music include free improvisation, contemporary music ( John Cage , Morton Feldman , Iannis Xenakis etc.) and ethnic music (such as classical Indian, Japanese and Iranian music as well as folk music from Sweden, Norway, North America). Since 1976 Sandell has worked in numerous band projects, solo projects and works for dance theater, drama and film. From 1979 to 1898 he played in the Sa Vidare formation , with guitarist Peter Söderberg and saxophonist Johan Petri , whose musical concept was "structurally organized improvisations". Since 1988 he has formed the Gush Trio with saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and drummer Raymond Strid . In his solo projects, Sandell worked with various instrumentations such as piano, synthesizer, sampling, percussion and voice.

Sten Sandell made numerous tours in Europe and North America; Among other things, he played at the FMP Festival in Berlin in 1994. In the course of his career he also worked with musicians such as Carl-Axel Dominique , Anders Jormin , Sainkho Namtchylak , Jon Rose , Mats Persson and Evan Parker . Kristine Scholz , David Moss , Phil Wachsmann and Sven-Åke Johansson together.

In his quartet, which was created in 1995, Sandell used instruments such as lute , theorbo , cello, marimba, percussion, piano, harmonium and vocals and played composed material (e.g. by Cage, Feldman, Nancarrow , Sandberg and the band members) as well as free improvisation.
