Sofia Jernberg (born July 5, 1983 in Ethiopia ) is a Swedish singer ( soprano ) and composer of creative jazz and improvisation music . She is considered a "singer who is constantly on the move to explore new terrain."

Live and act

Jernberg, who grew up in Vietnam and Sweden, was initially trained in a choir. As a teenager she discovered her interest in sounds far removed from western musical traditions and studied the work of Sainkho Namtchylak , Sidsel Endresen , Phil Minton and Diamanda Galás . Between 2002 and 2004 she studied jazz at the Fridhem Adult Education Center . Then she studied composition with Per Mårtensson and Henrik Strindberg at Gotlands Tonsättarskola . In 2008 she was honored with the Jazz Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music .

Together with the pianist Cecilia Persson she led the septet Paavo , which was also named Jazz Group of the Year by Sveriges Radio in 2008 and continues to exist as a trio. She became internationally known as the soloist in Mats Gustafsson's Fire! Orchestra . She also worked with DuoEgo , the Peärls Before Swïne Experience , Christof Kurzmann ( Song for Beggars ), the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra ( Moers Festival 2015), The Opera Group and the chamber music ensemble Norrbotten NEO , for which she also composes in part. She also appeared as a soloist in Arnold Schönberg's Pierrot Lunaire .
