Flipper is an American punk band from San Francisco , California.

history

In 1979 guitarist Ted Falconi and bassist Russell “Will Shatter” Wilkinson, who both had a punk background and had been playing casually together for several months, recruited singer Ricky Williams and together they formed the band Flipper, named after Williams' pets "Flipper" were called. Drummer Steve DePace completed the line-up. Falconi designed the band's distinctive logo, a stylized fish with protruding teeth. Before the first recordings, Williams was replaced by Bruice Calderwood.

After the drug death of bassist Wilkinson in 1987, the band disappeared for three years before they appeared again in 1990 with a new bassist (John Dougherty) and recorded a new album. Shortly after its release, the original singer Williams died of a heroin overdose. 1997 bassist Dougherty also died of an overdose. As a result, the band was no longer active until they started performing again in 2005. In December 2006, Krist Novoselić , formerly bassist of the band Nirvana , replaced bassist Steve DeMartis for a UK and Ireland tour and for the recordings for the 2009 albums Love and Fight .

style

The band shaped various alternative rock bands such as Nirvana , Killdozer and The Melvins with their dark, monotonous, bass-heavy style, which was later christened Noise Rock .
