Naked Raygun is a band from Chicago , which was formed in the early 1980s and is considered to be formative for the punk rock scene in Illinois . Bands like Alkaline Trio and Rise Against cite Naked Raygun as a major influence; The group is often compared to Hüsker Dü , the Buzzcocks or Wire .

Band history

A few years after their founding, Naked Raygun released their first album, Basement Screams, on the Chicago music label Ruthless Records (not to be confused with the hip-hop label of the same name). It should be the only album in the original line-up: guitarist Santiago Durango was about to be published in 1983 with the band Big Black of his friend Steve Albini joined and devoted himself henceforth exclusively to his new group. Albini was represented on Basement Screams with liner notes , a few years later he was again involved in a naked raygun work when he co-designed the artwork for All Rise . The new guitarist was John Haggerty.

After a few more albums, Haggerty also got out in 1989, he founded the band Pegboy together with his brother Joe . Another album was recorded with his replacement Bill Stephens, which is generally considered to be the weakest of the band. A short time after the publication of the work produced by Keith Fluffy Auerbach (including Revolting Cocks , Ministry ), Naked Raygun disbanded.

In 1999 Quaterstick and Touch and Go Records re- released all albums. In the same year there was also after a long time the first musical sign of life from Jeff Pezzati, who with his new band The Bomb released a first single on his newly founded label named after the fourth Naked Raygun album Jettison . Two albums have followed since then.

In 2006 the band got back together and played a few concerts. In 2007 a tour with the Swingin 'Utters followed , in 2008 with Hot Water Music and in 2009 with Paint It Black . In addition, Naked Raygun recorded two singles, which were sold as vinyl and download.

Quotes Related to Naked Raygun

At a live performance
  • Matt Skiba : “In the interview we just gave, the young lady asked me if there was such a thing as a Chicago sound. I replied that if there is, it was shaped by NAKED RAYGUN and PEGBOY . These are the bands I grew up with, I have often seen NAKED RAYGUN live, and if you put us in this tradition, I take it as a big compliment ”
  • Douglas McCombs from Tortoise on the hype of the Chicago music scene at the end of the nineties: “There were a lot of good bands in Chicago before that, like BIG BLACK , NAKED RAYGUN and the EFFIGIES . The press tried to conjure up a special Chicago sound through these and a few other bands, but actually these bands had at most marginal similarities. "
