Paint It Black is an American hardcore punk band from Philadelphia , Pennsylvania, founded in 2002 .

history

Paint It Black was founded in Philadelphia in 2002 by Dan Yemin, Dave HOME, Andy Nelson and David Wagenschutz with the aim of playing classic hardcore punk with a slightly melodic list in the style of Gorilla Biscuits , Minor Threat or Good Clean Fun .

The band members had previously worked in other hardcore bands. For example, the guitarist and later singer of the band, Dan Yemin, previously played with Lifetime and Kid Dynamite , David Wagenschutz was already active with Good Riddance and None More Black . Finally, Dave HOME and Andy Nelson previously played with the Philadelphia hardcore band Affirmative Action Jackson .

After the demo - EP in 2002 followed a year later the first album called CVA . About the first album, Dan Yemin said :

When you record a tape, you always have 30-40 seconds free at the end of each page that you don't get completely. We wanted to write a couple of songs that could be packed with tapes like that. "

Two years later the second album, Paradise, was released. By then, guitarist Dave HOME had already left the band. Colin McGinniss, who stood in for him, did not stay long either - Josh Agran followed him.

In 2006 David Wagenschutz also left the band. His place was taken by Jared Shavelson, who also previously worked for None More Black .

After the album New Lexikon , which was released in 2008 , the band released the first of two EPs called Amnesia in June 2009 .

style

The band mostly plays classic, but often melodic hardcore punk . With the album New Lexicon there are also some experimental influences reminiscent of post-hardcore .

According to punknews.org , the band plays rough hardcore punk reminiscent of early Black Flag and Minor Threat .

In terms of content, the band deals with (left) political issues, whereby the hardcore scene itself as well as friendship and solidarity play a role in the band's lyrics.

Dan Yemin said in an interview about the reason he makes music in a hardcore band:

" " I think one of my jobs with Paint It Black is to show people what real hardcore punk rock sounds like, or at least my version of it. [...] Fast, aggressive, wild, political, committed and smart. " "
