The Lunachicks were an American punk band belonging to the riot grrrl movement and were founded in 1987 in New York City . The band never officially split up, but, apart from two reunion appearances, has not been active since 2000.

history

Theo Kogan, Gina Volpe and Sydney "Squid" Silver were studying together at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City when they decided in 1987 to start their own band. Shortly afterwards, a fourth band member was found with Silver's friend Sindi Benezra and a friend of Korgans temporarily stepped in as a drummer, they began to write and rehearse songs.

They had their first appearance in 1988. Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth were also present at one of the subsequent appearances . Both were impressed by the performance and gave the band a record deal with the British label Blast First and also offered themselves as producers for a first album. However, since creative differences quickly arose when working together in the studio, both bands went their separate ways again.

In 1989 the EP Sugar Luv was finally released and the following year the debut album Babysitters on Acid . The latter, however, could only be distributed within Europe until its re-release by the Go-Kart Records label in 2001. Since the band also disagreed with the music production and management of Blast First and also received no income from album sales, they switched to the Safe House label .

In 1990 and 1991 tours with bands such as Dinosaur Jr. and The Dictators followed . After the release of the second album Binge & Purge in 1992, the band went on tour through Japan, during which they recorded the EP Sushi Ala Mode , which was released exclusively there in the spring of 1993. In September of the same year, the band took part in the US tour of The Offspring ; Theo Kogan later worked on the band's music videos .

After the band was signed by the New York label Go-Kart Records , the third album Jerk of All Trades was released in 1995 and the fourth album Pretty Ugly in 1997 , the latter being produced by Ryan Greene and Fat Mike from NOFX . Shortly thereafter, rhythm guitarist Sindi Benezra left the band, although her position was not filled later. In January 1996, they performed with Deborah Harry and Joan Jett at one of the first concerts to be broadcast live over the Internet, which was followed by over four million people worldwide.

A recording of a concert at Coney Island was released as a live album Drop Dead Live in August 1998 . The last album to date, Luxury Problem , was released in June 1999. In this year and the following, the band also took part in the Warped Tour . From the summer of 2000, the Lunachicks stopped all activities. The only exception was two reunion appearances, one in April 2002 in New York City at the CBGB and one in April 2004 in Washington, DC at a concert for women's rights .

Solo projects

Since the band has been inactive, all band members have been pursuing other projects. Singer Theo Kogan founded the indie rock band Theo & the Skyscrapers together with her husband and occasionally works as a model and actress (including in Bringing Out the Dead , Zoolander , Alle liebe Oscar or In the Cut ). Chip English plays drums in her band Suicide King and guitarist Gina Volpe founded her own band Bantam in New York . Helen Destroy plays drums in the Led Zeppelin tribute band Lez Zeppelin .
