To the Extreme ( English for " to the extreme ") is the first studio album by the US rapper Vanilla Ice to be released on a major label . It was released on September 3, 1990 on the SBK Records label.

Vanilla Ice produced seven tracks on the album itself. Two or three instrumentals each come from the music producers Khayree, Earthquake and Darryl Williams, while one beat each was produced by David Deberry and Kim Sharp.

To the Extreme rose to number 72 in the German charts on December 10, 1990 and reached the highest position on February 4, 1991 at number 13. It was able to stay in the top 100 for a total of 24 weeks. The album was particularly successful in the United States, where it ranked # 1 for 16 weeks and stayed in the top 200 for 67 weeks.

On April 25, 1990, the first single Play That Funky Music was released , which initially missed the charts. The second release, Ice Ice Baby , which was released on July 2, 1990, became a worldwide hit, helped Vanilla Ice to achieve a commercial breakthrough and also boosted sales of the album. Ice Ice Baby reached the top of the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom and was number 2 in Germany. As a result, Play That Funky Music also reached number 4 in the USA and number 19 in Germany. The third and final single was song I Love You released, which ranked 65th in Germany.

Sales figures and awards

To the Extreme sold more than seven million copies in the United States and was awarded 7 times platinum , making it one of the most successful rap albums in the United States. In the UK, the album earned a platinum record for over 300,000 sales and a gold record in Switzerland for over 25,000 copies sold .

The single Ice Ice Baby received a gold record in Germany and Austria and platinum in the United Kingdom and the United States. In addition, the song Play That Funky Music was awarded a gold record in the United States.
