Songs of the Ungrateful Living ( German : songs about ungrateful life) is the sixth studio album by the American rapper and singer Everlast . It was released on October 18, 2011 via Martyr Inc. Another version contains three more bonus songs and was released through Long Branch Records. There is also a fye exclusive version on which the buyer receives an additional CD. I Get By and Long Time are the two single releases from the album.

background

He was inspired to write the album by the conditions in the United States , which Everlast believes are getting worse and worse. He sees a lot of people around who are suffering and struggling to make a living. With Songs of the Ungrateful Living, he wants to let the listener know what is really going on. The gap between rich and poor will widen even further. He further explained: "Musically and lyrically this album reflects the interplay of ebb and flow that I have experienced in recent years".

In an interview with ArtsBeat, he described 65 Roses as his personal favorite song on the album and justified this with his daughter's illness, who had cystic fibrosis . 65 Roses is an organization in the United States that supports children with cystic fibrosis.

Cover

The entire cover is black and white. In the middle you can see a skull on which a bark beetle is crawling. The skull is surrounded by bushes, at the top it says “EVERLAST”, while at the bottom “Songs of the UNGRATEFUL LIVING” can be read, whereby the first three words of the album title are decorated, clearly smaller and shown in a loop.

Alexander Austel from laut.de wrote that, unlike the releases of La Coka Nostra, of which he is a member, Everlast has moved away from rap and thus from hip-hop with Songs of the Ungrateful Living , and instead this album is "soaked" with blues and country. He described Long At All as a deep ballad about "life and death", which is accompanied by slow, "dreamy" sounding guitar melodies. On the single I Get By you can hear him rhyming and singing, both elements merge into a "certain flow". The Rain is also one of the more hip-hop-heavy songs on the album. The blues and country borrowings are "tiring" along the length of the album, but the instruments played live harmonize with one another. Finally, Austel wrote that Songs of the Ungrateful Living contained few, but "very fine" rap parts.

Andreas Schiffmann from Musikreviews.de wrote in his review that Everlast wrote texts as it should be for someone with “his background”. He praised the songs My House and, as he writes, “fellow singer” Long Time , as well as the pieces The Crown and Moneymaker . His lyrics are "arbitrarily intelligent". In conclusion, Schiffmann described Songs of the Ungrateful Living as Everlast's “best record so far” and justified this with Everlast's rich lyrics and the musical variety, which was also catchy.
