history
Originally the place was named Near Rockaway. Its origins lay in shipping and trade on the south coast of Long Island . The location was favorable for ships because it was due to deep navigable gullies into the interior of the peninsula. Finally, in 1688, a flour mill was built on the Mill River by Joseph Haviland . The Haviland-Davison Grist Mill in Memorial Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. An oven that was added later served to make bread for the surrounding population. The village prospered thanks to shipping and the mill.
In 1869 the name of the place was changed to East Rockaway, and in 1900 the place was incorporated as the Village. The first president of the village was Floyd Johnson, and at the time of incorporation the place had 969 residents.
