Muttontown is a village with the status " Incorporated Village " in Nassau County in the US state of New York with 3627 inhabitants (2013).

geography

Muttontown is located on Long Island , about 35 kilometers east of central Manhattan . The John F. Kennedy International Airport is located approximately 25 kilometers in the southwest. Interstate 495 Highway runs south of Muttontown .

history

In the 17th century , settlers from England and Holland settled in the area. Because of the many meadows in the area, sheep farming became the main livelihood of the inhabitants. Wool and lamb and mutton were exported. The name of the place Muttontown is also derived from the sheep farm: Mutton = mutton.

The Incorporated Village of Muttontown was officially incorporated on August 31, 1931. The Benjamin Moore Estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Due to its proximity to New York City , but in a secluded and scenic area, many wealthy residents of the metropolis chose Muttontown as their retirement home.
