Juraj Stanik

Juraj Stanik (born December 31, 1969 in Amersfoort ) is a Dutch jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Act

Stanik began playing the cello at the age of eight and continued his education at the age of twelve at the secondary school of the Royal Conservatory of The Hague . During his cello studies he became interested in jazz music when he heard Frans Elsen , with whom he then studied jazz piano. He graduated from the Royal Conservatory with cum laude . During his studies he played in a duo with the alto saxophonist Benjamin Herman .

Stanik became a member of the successful quintet of Ben van den Dungen and Jarmo Hoogendijk , with whom he toured in Germany and other countries and performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival . He performed with his own sextet at the Ivrea Jazz Festival . In New York City he played with John Swana , Essiet Essiet and Tim Armacost . With Benjamin Herman and Jasper Blom he founded the quintet Five up High , which appeared at numerous festivals and released an album in 1994 on Timeless Records . He also played with Brand New Orleans , with Benjamin Herman and DJ Graham B at The Soul Kitchen and with Eveline and the Groove Movement . He released several CDs with his trio. He also accompanied Toon Roos on a Spanish tour and works in a duo with Ack van Rooyen , but has also performed with Alvin Queen , Bob Berg , Benny Bailey , Benny Golson , Chris Potter , Pat Metheny and Tom Harrell .

Stanik teaches as a lecturer at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Prizes and awards

Stanik was a finalist in the Dutch Wessel-Ilcken competition. He received the Pall Mall Export Swing Award and won the international competition of the Leverkusener Jazztage with the quintet Five Up High .
