Toon Roos

Toon Roos (born April 11, 1964 ) is a Dutch jazz saxophonist (tenor) and composer.

Roos studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory with Ferdinand Povel (graduated in 1985). As a student he played at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 1984 , followed by a tour through Holland, played as a soloist with the Metropole Orkest and recorded his first album "First Impression" (Timeless Records) with his quartet in the same year. Shortly afterwards he received the Wessel-Ilcken Prize for the best young jazz musician. Since then he has played at numerous festivals and recorded albums with his own groups (Toon Roos Quartet, Toon Roos Group, Ack van Rooyen / Toon Roos Quintet). He played u. a. with Benjamin Herman , Ivan Paduart , Enrico Pieranunzi , John Scofield , Bob Brookmeyer , Philip Catherine , Joe Zawinul . In 1989 he went to New York on a grant from the Dutch Ministry of Culture, where he took lessons from George Coleman , Bob Berg and Bill Evans . He also played there with the organist Jack McDuff and Toots Thielemans .

He was a member of the big band of John Clayton , the Metropole Orkest and the "Concert Jazz Band" (led by Henk Meutgeert ). Since it was founded in 1983, he has been a member of the “Dutch Jazz Orchestra” (sometimes led by Jerry van Rooyen ). On their album "Update" he is a soloist alongside Rob Madna .

In 2001 he won the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival . Since 1993 he has taught at various conservatories in the Netherlands (Maastricht, Hilversum, Groningen, currently The Hague and Utrecht) and in master classes.

Members of his funk-jazz band "Toon Roos Group" are currently the pianist and keyboardist Berthil Bustra, the guitarist Peter Tiehuis , the bassist Boudewijn Lucas, the drummer Martijn Vink and the percussionist Bart Fermie. Members of his jazz quartet "Toon Roos Quartet" are the pianist Karel Boehlee , the bassist Hein van de Geyn and the drummer Dré Pallemaerts .
