Martone is an Italian city in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria with 510 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Martone is 106 km northeast of Reggio Calabria on the slopes of the Serre . The neighboring municipalities are Fabrizia ( VV ), Gioiosa Ionica , Grotteria , Nardodipace (VV), Roccella Ionica and San Giovanni di Gerace .

Martone station was on the narrow-gauge railway line Gioiosa Jonica – Mammola .

Attractions

The medieval town center has been partially preserved. Byzantine necropolises are located in the tuff stone in the vicinity of the village . The feast of the city patron San Giorgio is celebrated in August. A competition is held in which a 25 meter high greased tree trunk has to be climbed, on which gifts are attached.
