Polistena is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 10,212 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria . The municipality is located about 50 kilometers northeast of Reggio Calabria and about 70 kilometers southwest of Catanzaro .
history
The name already suggests a Greek origin ( Polyxene , Polysthene ; possibly as "fortified city" - polis, tene). The origin itself is unknown. Its existence is documented by documents since the 11th century AD. The settlement flourished in the Middle Ages, but the earthquake of 1783 destroyed large parts of the region and also Polistenas.

Polistena is on Strada Statale 682 Jonio-Tirreno . The State Road 281 and State Road 536 pass through the town. The Polistena station is on the non-electrified railway line from Gioia Tauro to Cinquefrondi . It is a narrow-gauge railway (950 mm rail spacing)
