Scilla is a city of Metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in the region of Calabria in Italy with 4798 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Scilla is 28 km north of Reggio Calabria directly on the Strait of Messina . The main industries are fishing and tourism.
The neighboring municipalities are Bagnara Calabra , Fiumara , Roccaforte del Greco , San Roberto , Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte , Santo Stefano in Aspromonte , Sinopoli and Villa San Giovanni .
history
Scilla was the ancient Scyllaeum . In 42 BC A naval battle between Octavian , the later Emperor Augustus, and Sextus Pompeius , the son of the great Pompey , took place before Scyllaeum . In the Middle Ages Scilla was conquered by the Saracens and the Normans. In 1783 the place was partially destroyed by an earthquake.
Attractions
The Chiesa dello Spirito Santo from the 18th century with a baroque facade and the Chiesa dell'Immacolata are worth seeing. This was completely rebuilt in the 20th century and shows a mosaic of the city. Above the Chiesa dell'Immacolata is the castle of the Ruffo family , who ruled the city from the 16th to the beginning of the 19th century.
The patron saint of the city is San Rocco .
mythology
According to an ancient legend, the sea monster Scylla, known from Greek mythology, is said to have lived here, and Charybdis, the counterpart in the Sicilian Messina opposite .
