Africo is an Italian city in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria with 2899 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Africo is 76 km east of Reggio Calabria . The place is on the coast of the Ionian Sea . The neighboring municipalities are Bianco , Bruzzano Zeffirio , Cosoleto , Roghudi , Samo , Sant'Agata del Bianco and Staiti .

The inhabitants live from agriculture and the production of cement. Tourism is underdeveloped, although the proximity of the Ionian Sea would allow hotels to be established.

history

The place was founded in the 9th century BC. Founded. The place was damaged in the earthquakes in 1783, 1905 and 1908. After a flood in October 1951, Africo and the district of Casalinuovo were destroyed. The city was rebuilt on a slightly higher level.
