'Ndrangheta

San Luca is considered a stronghold of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta . Due to the feud that broke out in 1991 between the Strangio-Nirta and Pelle-Romeo families, which has resulted in 26 deaths so far, the village is named for this vendetta . The clashes reached Germany as a result of the Mafia murders in Duisburg on August 15, 2007. In 2011 and 2013 the council was disbanded because of ties to the 'Ndrangheta. Since 2013 the place has been administered by a commissioner sent by the regional government.
