Mafia murders in Duisburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An event became known as the Mafia murders in Duisburg , in which six people were shot in front of an Italian restaurant in Duisburg in the morning hours of August 15, 2007 . Due to its brutality, the case also caused a stir abroad. The background to the act was the feud between two warring 'Ndrangheta families. The main perpetrator was arrested in Amsterdam in March 2009 and later extradited to Italy. On July 12, 2011, he was sentenced to life imprisonment before a jury in Locri, Calabria .

Course of events

On August 14, 2007 the landlord of the Duisburg restaurant "Da Bruno" Sebastiano S. met his apprentice Tommaso-Francesco V. and four other relatives of the landlord in the restaurant to celebrate the apprentice's 18th birthday. When they left the restaurant and went to their cars after two o'clock, they were shot dead by people who were initially unknown. The emergency call was received by the police at 2:24 a.m., and they were there at 2:30 a.m. The victims sat in their cars and 54 shots were fired at them. Shortly after the crime, it was speculated that the crime was linked to a feud between two warring families of the mafia organization 'Ndrangheta .

Background of the fact

The Mafia murders in Duisburg were the culmination of a family feud between the Mafia families Strangio-Nirta and Pelle-Romeo, which developed after a carnival joke on February 11, 1991 in San Luca and a dispute resulting from it. The dispute was followed by a brawl between members of both families, and days later two young men were found murdered. The feud remained quiet for years until on December 25, 2006, 33-year-old Maria S., the wife of one of the two alleged main perpetrators, was found murdered. The 25-year-old Marco M. was probably the perpetrator who killed Maria S. at the time. He was on the run from Mafiosi in Germany when he was shot with the other victims in the restaurant.

Investigations and arrests

Only a few weeks after the crime, Giovanni Strangio, who was later arrested, was linked to the crime. The BKA had received information about the incidents from the Italian police at Christmas 2006 and passed it on to Duisburg because of the family connections known to the police. Giovanni Strangio is said to have shot the six Italian men with an accomplice on the morning of August 15, 2007. His DNA and smoke traces were found in the escape vehicle . The investigations by the Italian and German police were subsequently intensified and a joint task force was formed to resolve the case.

The first successes were reported four months after the crime, when four suspects were arrested in Neuss , Oberhausen and San Luca . In August 2008, a brother-in-law of the woman who was killed in 2006 was arrested and suspected of being behind the attack. In October 2008 the leader of the Mafia family Pelle-Romeo was arrested in Italy. He is said to have given the order in 2006 to kill Maria S. Her husband, who is considered one of the main suspects, was arrested by Dutch police officers in Amsterdam in November 2008.

A fine dust sticker in his apartment ultimately put the police on the trail of Giovanni Strangio: The sticker was issued on a Frankfurt car of a contact who ultimately led the police to the hiding place. After she had observed the house for months , the perpetrator was arrested on the evening of March 12, 2009 in Amsterdam. With him were his wife and another possible suspect. Like the other main suspect, he was later extradited to Italy.

In September 2013, the fugitive Mafia boss Francesco Nirta, who had already been sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, was arrested in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands .

The investigations by the German police also showed that the 'Ndrangheta now has fixed bases, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia .

process

The trial of Giovanni Strangio and two other suspects began in Locri, Calabria, in April 2010. This was embedded in a large trial in which a total of 14 'Ndrangheta members were indicted. Seven of them, including the main perpetrator of the murders in Duisburg, were sentenced to life imprisonment on July 12, 2011.
