The Gioiosa Jonica – Mammola railway was a single-track, narrow - gauge railway in Calabria . The route led from Gioiosa Jonica on the Taranto – Reggio di Calabria route through the Torbido Valley for 14.5 km to Mammola . It opened in 1931 and closed in 1968.

history

The original project of the Mediterranea-Calabro-Lucane (MCL) planned to connect Gioiosa Jonica via Mammola with Cinquefrondi and thus with the Gioia Tauro – Cinquefrondi railway. This would have created a continuous connection from the Ionian to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The line to Mammola was opened on August 1, 1931; the sequel was never built. From September 1, 1968, rail traffic was discontinued and replaced by a bus line.

business

MCL M1

The line was operated from the until 1961 by the MCL, then by Ferrovie Calabro Lucane (FCL). Mainly rail buses of the type MCL M1 were used .
