Rete Mediterranea ( RM ; German Mediterranean network ) is the historical abbreviation for the railway network operated by the Italian Società per le Strade Ferrate del Mediterraneo in the western part of the Italian peninsula from the Italian "boot tip" north to Apulia and Calabria , where it is the catchment area des Rete Adriatica ("Adriatic Network") touched. According to the yearbook of the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Trade, the network comprised a route network of 5,765 kilometers in 1896.

The Rete Mediterranea was founded on July 1st, 1885. In 1905, with the establishment of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), the RM network was nationalized together with the other large Italian private railways. In 1907, the Mediterranea took over the Ferrovie Nord Milano from the Société générale de Belgique .

Mediterranea-Calabro-Lucane

In 1910 the company received a concession to build a branch line network in southern Italy. In 1915 the company changed its name to Società Mediterranea per le Ferrovie Calabro Lucane (short Mediterranea-Calabro-Lucane MCL). In 1926 the network was reduced to the routes that had already begun and in 1934 construction work was stopped entirely. 765 kilometers of the dismembered network were in operation. After the railway accident at Fiumarella in 1963, the MCL's concession was revoked and given to Ferrovie Calabro Lucane . In the 1970s, Mediterranea withdrew completely from rail operations with the sale of Ferrovie Nord.
