history

Machine no. 504 collecting water in Gimigliano

In the 1920s, the MCL suffered from a lack of efficient rack-and-pinion locomotives. The 200 series did not prove itself and the “Svizzere” designated series 250 and 260 were too weak. They were the former HG 3/3 1, 3, 6 and HG 3/3 7, 8, 10 of the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB), which were no longer needed in Switzerland after they were electrified. In 1932, CEMSA delivered the six Prairie locomotives of the 500 series with separate adhesion and gear drive system Winterthur in Saronno . Thanks to the symmetrical axis sequence with the two Bissel running axles at the front and rear, there was no need to turn the machines on the turntables of the end stations. The rack and pinion locomotives came to the Lagonegro and Catanzaro depots for use on the Lagonegro – Spezzano Albanese route and the then newly opened rack section in Catanzaro .

More than half of the locomotives were preserved. Number 504 is stationed in Catanzaro as a museum locomotive, 503 is a memorial on the station square in Castrovillari , 502 and 506 are parked.
