Appeldorn
Appeldorn is a district of the city of Kalkar on the lower left Lower Rhine . It is located in the south-east of the area of the city of Kalkar in the Rhine lowlands. At the end of 2018 it had 1,546 inhabitants.
geography
At the Boetzelaer Meer nature reserve , a former arm of the Rhine, lies Boetzelaer Castle , a former moated castle converted into a hotel, which is also used for cultural events. A sequoia tree grows in the garden (natural monument Kalkar ND06).
history
The so-called battle in the Reichswald took place in the spring of 1945 in the nearby Klever Reichswald and in the vicinity of today's town . In this battle for the Lower Rhine, the place was badly affected.
On July 1, 1969, Appeldorn was incorporated into Kalkar .
economy
Appeldorn is the location of the Pfeifer & Langen sugar factory .
Attractions
One of the most interesting buildings in town is the St. Lambertus Church . It consists of an old and a new part.
On the Fatima path, in the outskirts of the village, there is a Fatima chapel. There is also a particularly thick pear tree on this path (natural monument Kalkar ND 07).
