Bylerward is a district of the Lower Rhine city of Kalkar in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Kleve . The thinly populated polder area between Wissel and Emmericher Eyland is drained by the Kalflack river , which flows around the polder to the west and flows into the Rhine opposite Emmerich . Minor drainage ditches are the Volksgatt and the duck marsh ditch .

The approximately 728 hectare area is a landscape protection area and is mainly used for agriculture . Since the 1960s , the polder, which previously experienced annual floods , has been protected by a massive winter dike .

Plans for the construction of a runway for glider pilots (and perhaps also some sport aircraft ) have not been pursued until now (2015) after protests by concerned residents.
