Hanselaer is a district of the city of Kalkar on the lower left Lower Rhine . At the end of 2018 it had 121 inhabitants.

Spatial location

The center of Hanselaer is just under 2 km east of the medieval town center of Kalkar. The area between Kalkar and Hanselaer is largely used as pastureland. Until 1965, when a new dyke system was built, it was frequently flooded when the Rhine flooded. Presumably, an arm of the Rhine extended here in Roman times.

History and sights

On July 1, 1969, Hanselaer was incorporated into Kalkar.

Hanselaer was mentioned in a document as early as the 12th century . The Cologne women's monastery Sankt Maria im Kapitol owned an estate with a church here - even before the city of Kalkar was founded in 1230 on the Kalkarward sandbank to the west, which was originally surrounded by the Rhine.

The small Hansela village church Sankt Antonius Abbas is surrounded by the cemetery, the sexton's house and old farms. Visitors can still see almost the same picture as the Dutch artist Jan de Beijer when he drew “'t Dorp Hanseler” in 1746 . Hardly any other village on the Lower Rhine has preserved its external appearance as well as Hanselaer over the past few decades.

Today's church building is around 500 years old. Traces of a previous building, a Romanesque hall church, can still be seen in the tuff and brick masonry of the single-nave Gothic church . Originally covered with flat roofs, the nave and choir were given a ribbed vault in 1444 , which was painted with tendrils and figures of saints.

Sankt Antonius Abbas is considered one of the most beautiful village churches on the Lower Rhine. The interior is richly decorated with three carved altars. A crucifixion group stands on the crossbar of the triumphal arch between the choir and nave . The high altar in the choir with a virtuously carved crown made of tendrils and leaf crabs is particularly worth seeing . The three-part altar shrine, which is attributed to the circle of the wood sculptor Arnt van Tricht , was created around 1530 . It houses late Gothic sculptures of Our Lady as well as Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara, who are represented as elegantly dressed common women in the fashion of their time.

The southern route and the northern route of the Via Romana long-distance cycle route , which connects Xanten with Nijmegen, lead through Hanselaer . Near the Hanselaer church, a display board provides information about the Roman equestrian camp Burginatium , located a good 2 km south of Hanselaer at the foot of the Monreberg .
