Originally located on an island on the Rhine, Hönnepel was first mentioned around 1100 and belonged to the Land Aspel , which in 1392 came from the Cologne archbishopric to the county of Kleve . For a while there was a branch of the Denain Abbey in Hönnepel , which sold its Hönnepel farm to the Xanten Abbey in 1240 . The Regenfledis Church became an independent parish in 1437; its current structure dates from the 15th century and was heavily rebuilt in the 19th century. Hönnepel was the seat of the Lords of Hönnepel, of whose castle little remains have been preserved.

In the nearby Reichswald and in the vicinity of today's town, the so-called battle in the Reichswald raged in spring 1945 . In this battle for the Lower Rhine, the place was badly affected.

On July 1, 1969, Hönnepel was incorporated into Kalkar.

The Kalkar nuclear power plant (SNR-300) is located near Hönnepel. Construction began in 1972, but was never connected to the grid due to massive protests. The resistance was led by Josef Maas ("Bauer Maas"), whose country had been chosen as the location for the breeder reactor. Today the area is used as the Wunderland Kalkar amusement park .
