Reinhold Kasten

Reinhold Kasten (* 1920 ; † 2011 ) was a German adventurer and circumnavigator of the 20th century.

Life

He became a seaman at the age of 14 and then went to sea for 56 years. In 42 journeys around the world, he covered over a million nautical miles. He crossed the Bermuda Triangle 24 times, circumnavigated Cape Horn 20 times, and crossed the Strait of Magellan 18 times . He survived four shipwrecks.

On his travels he collected more than 8000 sights from all over the world, e.g. For example, the silver chair of the King of Tonga, Albert Schweitzer's pith helmet , imperial chairs and vases from China, real shrunken heads (of animals) and over 500 tropical animals such as butterflies, snakes, spiders and scorpions, some of which are already protected today. The exhibits were on display for decades in Lübeck near the Holstentor on the museum ship Mississippi , which Kasten knew from its time in the Navy during World War II . From 2002 the exhibition was housed in the "Teepott" Rostock-Warnemünde .
