The Via Romana is a 257 km long long- distance cycle route in North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands .

Here, her route is divided: The northern route runs from Xanten to Nijmegen along the Rhine and is 98 km, the 159 km long southern route takes off on its course from Nijmegen to Xanten from the Rhine to instead through cities like Kleve or the Dutch Heumen to to lead.

history

The course of the Via Romana is based on a former Roman army road , which was laid west of the Rhine in the first half of the 1st century to connect the military camps located there. The most important places along this route were the most important settlements on the Lower Rhine, Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum (today's Nijmegen ) and Colonia Ulpia Traiana (near Xanten), which today mark the starting points of the Via Romana. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Heeresstrasse remained important, at least as a trade route, so that numerous sights along the route can be discovered not only from the time of the Romans.

Route profile

The Via Romana leads through typical Lower Rhine natural landscapes to medieval town centers, churches worth seeing, a diverse museum landscape and numerous recreational facilities.

The Via Romana is continuously signposted by a hexagonal sign with a special symbol (a stylized representation of the Via Romana along the Rhine next to a stylized bicycle). The color of the direction arrows indicates the course of the route: red arrows lead in the direction of Xanten, green arrows in the direction of Nijmegen. In addition to this actual signage, signs with the symbol of the route were also set up along the main traffic routes to make motorists aware of them.

The northern part of the Via Romana connects the cities and communities Xanten - Kalkar - Bedburg-Hau - Kranenburg - Ubbergen (NL) - Nijmegen (NL) from southeast to northwest . From northwest to southeast the southern section connects Nijmegen (NL) - Heumen (NL) - Cuijk (NL) - Mook en Middelaar (NL) - Groesbeek (NL) - Kranenburg - Kleve - Bedburg-Hau - Kalkar - Xanten.
