The Kalflack is a tributary of the Rhine in the Lower Rhine region of North Rhine-Westphalia . The river drains an area of almost 23,000  ha (= 230  km² ).

geography

The Kalflack begins roughly between Sonsbeck and the Alps in the Wesel district , on the northern edge of the Bönninghardt ridge , and is initially called Hohe Ley . From here the Hohe Ley flows past Marienbaum and Appeldorn in the direction of Kalkar , whereby the municipality of Uedem is still affected on the edge. A little southwest of Appeldorn or northwest of Kehrum opens the Boetzelaersche Ley from the right . From this confluence, the body of water bears the name Leybach .

A little south of the city center of Kalkar, the Leybach divides into two arms , of which the eastern one is still called Leybach and the other as a city moat flows around the city center of Kalkar to the west. To the north of the center of Kalkar both arms flow together again and from here on they bear the name Kalflack .

To the north of Kalkar, the Kalflack runs first between Wissel and Till , then between Bylerward and Huisberden and between Emmericher Eyland and Warbeyen , where it runs through a pumping station at the Hurendeich which is provided with a fish ladder . About 1 km north of it, the Kalflack finally flows into the Rhine opposite Emmerich .

landscape

The Kalflack runs through the bed of an earlier arm of the Rhine , which in earlier centuries was navigable to Kalkar . The river has largely retained the originally meandering course of the Old Rhine arm. The water management of Kalflack lies with the Deichverband Xanten-Kleve .

From Kalkar and north of it there are several bridges over the Kalflack in Kalkar itself, at Till , at Huisberden and at Emmericher Eyland . At the Kalflack pumping station on the Hurendeich shortly before it flows into the Rhine, the water can also be crossed via the Rhine dyke that crosses there.

The river is only fished extensively by sport fishermen and fishing clubs , and eel is also caught. Other fish species are tench , roach , rudd and pikeperch . From Marienbaum downstream, the water can theoretically be navigated by canoes , although you have to reckon with individual obstacles such as small weirs and gratings against driftwood .

Most of the banks of the river north of Kalkar are not open to the public because since November 2000 they have been subject to nature conservation regulations over a length of 9 km as a fauna and flora habitat (FFH) . Kingfishers can be seen there in winter , while the fields and pastureland on the banks are used by wild swans and arctic geese as wintering areas.

The Kalflack as the municipal and polder border

The Kalflack marks a longer stretch, from Till to Emmericher Eyland, the municipal border between the city of Kalkar and the municipality of Bedburg-Hau . The Bylerward polder area belonging to Kalkar in the triangle between Grieth , Wissel and Huisberden is surrounded by the Kalflack on its west side. In this agricultural area, the farms were formerly built on terps because the Rhine could overflow its banks over a wide area in winter. Since the piling up, the river's flora and fauna are no longer influenced by large changes in the water level .

A few years ago, the North Rhine-Westphalian state government made plans to convert the Bylerward polder into a flood protection polder to catch any Rhine floods. Protests by the local population, in particular by the agricultural businesses that have existed there for generations and that had paid for the maintenance of the reinforced Rhine dike for decades, have prevented this so far.

Trivia

The name of the river is also often written as "Kalflak" and in this form is a so-called palindrome (reverse word).
