Jan Willem Achterkamp (* 1953 in Apeldoorn , Province of Gelderland , Netherlands ) is a Dutch carilloneur , composer , singing teacher , choir director and organist .

Life

Jan Willem Achterkamp studied solo singing and school music at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. At the Dutch Carillon School he took lessons from Arie Abbenes (* 1944) and received his Bachelor of Carillon degree in 2005.

From 1983 to 2012 he worked as a singing teacher and taught music theory at the Center for Music and Dance in Deventer . He was a lecturer at the Hugo Distler Days in Utrecht in 1992 . For the Dutch radio station IKON (Interkerkelijke Omroep Nederland) he designed a series about the musical aspects of Dietrich Bonhoeffer .

In 1996/97 he took a composition course with Daan Manneke at the Sweelinck Conservatory , which was regularly followed by private lessons. In 1997, his first composition, Cantus Terstegen in which Anna Church premiered in Aachen. He took private organ lessons from Bert Matter (* 1937). He received lessons in improvisation from Henk W. Luymes.

He was Carilloneur in Bathmen from September 2008 to January 1, 2020 . After Achterkamp had rendered outstanding services to the restoration of the carillon in Nyenrode Castle in Breukelen , the seat of the Nyenrode University of Economics , he was appointed Carilloneur of the university on October 1, 2011. On August 1st he was appointed Carilloneur of the city of Deventer. He also held this position until his retirement on January 1, 2020. Since 2007 he has played the carillon in Dinxperlo . Achterkamp has been a Carilloneur at the Grotekerk or St. Maartenskerk in Epe since September 1, 2019 .

He directed the choir of the Broederenkerk in Deventer and founded and directed the Distler Cantorij in Apeldoorn.
