The Noletmühle ( Dutch Noletmolen ; De Nolet for short , German  Die Nolet ) is a wind power plant in Schiedam in the Netherlands , which was built in the style of a Dutch windmill . Since its completion in 2006, it has been the tallest “classically” built windmill in the world.

history

background

A group of particularly tall gallery Dutch windmills has shaped the image of Schiedam since the 18th century . In the past, these mills were primarily used to grind malt for the numerous local distilleries . Of the former 20 Schiedam mills , only five have survived today. Of these, the De Noord mill (built in 1803) is the highest with a cap height (without blades) of 33.3 m. Since the cap of the former 38 m high mill De Hoop in Breda was dismantled in 1927, De Noord has been the tallest historic windmill in the world.

New building

In 2005, the Schiedamer distillery Nolet Distillery had a new old-style windmill built next to its premises for advertising purposes, which went into operation in May 2006. During construction, the previous record holder De Noord was exceeded by almost 10 m with a cap height of 42.5 m. In terms of impeller diameter, however, De Nolet is 29.85 m behind the Murphy mill (35 m), a wind pump built in 1905 in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco (USA) for irrigation with a Dutch look.

technology

Unlike its historical models, the Nolet mill is not used to grind grain or malt, but to generate electricity for the Nolet distillery's own needs . In contrast to watermills, where they were often converted into small hydropower plants , classic windmills are rarely used as wind power plants.

To generate electricity, the mill in the cap was equipped with a generator with a design capacity of 150 kilowatts. The mill generates around 250 MWh of electrical energy annually. The wings, which look like the wings of a sail gate, do not need to be covered with sailcloth, but rotate solely due to the aerodynamically shaped profile of the rods. The internal, electrically driven harvester for tracking the wind direction of the impeller works automatically; the external sword bar system ("Sterz") is only a dummy without any real function. The gallery is actually not necessary to operate the grand piano.
