De Grote of Sint Janskerk

The Grote or Janskerk is a church in the center of the Dutch city of Schiedam .

history

The Janskerk had a previous building from the 13th century. In 1335 the construction of a three-aisled Gothic hall church began. In 1425 there was the central nave with the five-sided choir, the rectangular closed north choir, the tower and the predecessor of today's south choir. The town fire of 1428 partially destroyed the church. The church was enlarged during the reconstruction. In 1434 the Lidwina Chapel was built in memory of St. Lidwina of Schiedam .
