Fladderak

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fladderak (formerly also: Fladderac ) is a liqueur from the Dutch city of Groningen .

Surname

The name "Fladderak" is of unclear origin, but is often associated with the family name of a tax officer from the village of Onderdendam near Bedum . Since the product was traditionally available in several places in the province of Groningen , this connection is often questioned. Other sources name an Anthonie van Fladeracken as a possible namesake, but nothing more is known about him, which is why this possibility is also considered unlikely. The origin of “ flacid arrac ” (for example: “limp drink”) is also questionable, since the term fladderac does not appear in English.

Manufacturer

At the beginning of the 20th century there were several liqueur manufacturers in various Dutch provinces that made Fladderak, such as B. Kooymans, Meder, Kuyper, JJ Melchers and Coebergh. As of the end of 2019, the drink will mainly be produced by the Hooghoudt company in the city of Groningen under the name "Hooghoudt Likeur Fladderak". Their family recipe is kept secret and dates from the end of the 19th century. The Jos Beeres wine shop in Noordbroek also sells Fladderak under its own name.

history

Around 1900 about 10,000 liters of Fladderak were produced per year. The liqueur was often drunk at the turn of the year. Fladderak was also used in mixed drinks. Gradually, the demand dropped drastically, so that in July 1997 only thirteen bottles were sold. When the Hooghoudt distillery announced the intended end of production, the last bottles were to be auctioned. However, there was a protest in the population of Groningen, which increased interest and demand, so that the manufacturer continued production.
