The King Seaways is a ferry of the Danish shipping company DFDS , which operates on the route IJmuiden - Newcastle .

history

Nils Holgersson (1987-1993)

The ship was built by Schichau Seebeckwerft AG, Bremerhaven , as Nils Holgersson and delivered to Wallenius Safe Felicia Ab on February 20, 1987. Home port became Trelleborg. It was used by the TT-Line on the Travemünde - Trelleborg route.

Val de Loire (1993-2006)

In December 1992 the ship was sold to the shipping company Brittany Ferries and withdrawn from the route on December 21, 1992. In January 1993 the ship was renamed Val de Loire . After extensive renovations, which were carried out from January to May 1993 in the Italian shipyard INMA (Industrie Navali Meccaniche Affini SpA) in La Spezia and in which the ship received a new bow section, it was used between Plymouth and Santander and Roscoff-Cork / Plymouth .

In November 2005, the ship was sold to DFDS and withdrawn from the Caen - Portsmouth route on February 19, 2006.

King of Scandinavia (2006-2011)

The ship was renamed the King of Scandinavia in February 2006 and has been serving the Ijmuiden – Newcastle route since March 11, 2006 together with the Queen of Scandinavia ferry .

Since May 29, 2007, the sister ship has also been in service on the same route , initially as Princess of Norway and since 2011 as Princess Seaways .

King Seaways (since 2011)

On January 27, 2011, the ship was renamed and is now called King Seaways .

On December 28, 2013, around 10:45 p.m., a fire broke out in a passenger cabin. The ship was at the time about 50 kilometers off the coast of Yorkshire on the way to Amsterdam. The fire was quickly extinguished, but seven people had to be rushed to hospital by helicopter because of smoke inhalation. The King Seaways returned to Newcastle the following morning. It was arson. A 26-year-old and a 28-year-old (this one because of rioting on board) were arrested.

In 2019, DFDS Seaways and Moby Lines signed an agreement to sell King Seaways and Princess Seaways . In return, DFDS Seaways was to take over the Moby Aki and Moby Wonder ferries from Moby Lines. However, Moby Lines was unable to hand over the ships in accordance with the contract, whereupon DFDS Seaways terminated the contract in October 2019.
