Moby Lines SpA is an Italian shipping company that uses its ferries from Italy from Sardinia , Corsica and Elba , as well as from mainland France Corsica. The sole shareholder of the company, which is currently based in Milan (previously Naples ), is Onorato Armatori. The former competitor Tirrenia - Compagnia italiana di navigazione has also belonged to the shipping company Vincenzo Onorato since 2015 . A merger of the two companies is planned.
history
The company was founded in 1959 as "Navigazione Arcipelago Maddalenino" (NAV.AR.MA). On April 10, 1991, a serious accident happened with the Moby Prince off the port of Livorno , the cause of which has never been fully clarified. Shortly thereafter, the name was changed to Moby Lines.
In 2007, the Linea dei Golfi shipping company was bought by Moby Lines, and Moby Lines owned five RoPax ships . Four RoPax ships were integrated into the fleet, one RoPax ship was resold to Grimaldi Lines.
In 2009, the attempt by Moby Lines to open the first all-French route Nice ↔ Bastia failed. The reason was that no suitable ship could be found for the narrow port of Nice. As a result, the new ship Moby Corse was bought by Brittany Ferries in 2010 in order to be able to operate the new route Toulon ↔ Bastia. In addition, the new ship will make 20 weekly departures on the Livorno ↔ Bastia route.
In 2010 Moby Lines announced that it would allow part of the ferry traffic to the port of Golfo Aranci. The goals were to make the port of Golfo Aranci (~ 20 km from Olbia) more attractive and at the same time to relieve the port of Olbia.
In May 2011, Moby Lines won a tender from the Tuscany region for the privatization of Tuscan island transport and in October 2011 took over the previous state line and direct competitor in Elba transport Toremar with the obligation to rejuvenate the fleet and continue to perform public transport tasks in the future the Tuscany region paid a price of € 160 million for 12 years.
Moby Lines has ordered two new RoPax ferries (with an option for two more) from the Chinese shipyard Guangzhou Shipyard for delivery in 2020/21.
In 2020 the company filed for bankruptcy. However, the operation of the ferries should not be affected.
