Johan "Joop" Butter [ ˈbʏˌtər ] (born November 18, 1936 in Velsen , North Holland ; † December 26, 2012 ) was a Dutch football player . He was initially at AFC Ajax in Amsterdam and as a professional at Go Ahead from Deventer .

Career

Butter, who was born in Velsen, played for the ASVA club there after his family moved to Amsterdam ; from there, talent scouts brought him to the AFC Ajax. While playing in the Ajax youth team, he became a U-18 international. As a youth player, Ajax signed him for the first team in 1955. He played 41 times for the Amsterdam team before he had to do his military service. He was stationed in Eefde , a place about ten kilometers south of Deventer . During this time he trained with the local Go Ahead club . When professional football was introduced in three leagues in the Netherlands in 1956, he signed a contract with Go Ahead , which took part in the Tweede Divisie , the third tier of the league. Three years later he rose to the second division with Go Ahead .

After four years in the Eerste Divisie , the team, which has been coached by František Fadrhonc since 1962, rose to the Eredivisie for the first time as second . While Butter was initially a striker - he scored 27 goals in the second division and 30 in the first division - he was retrained as a defender over time in Deventer and found his regular position as right-back. The 1962/63 season ended the team in twelfth place, in the following season it was eleventh and advanced to the cup final, which was lost. Since the Rotterdam final opponent Feijenoord won the double , Go Ahead was able to take part in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1965/66 . However, the preliminary rounds against the later semi-finalists Celtic FC from Glasgow were lost with 0: 6 and 0: 1. Over the next few years, Butter established itself among the top five in the Eredivisie with Go Ahead .

On September 26, 1964, a duel butters with the goalkeeper of SC Enschede , Piet Lagarde , caused a sensation. Lagarde was seriously injured by Butter's accidental kick; he lost a kidney and had to end his active career.

Butter wasn't great, but as a player he was a fast, aggressive "terrier" who gripped his opponent, hard in a duel without being unfair. remembered his former neighbor and teammate Gerard Somer after his death . After an injury-related operation, Butter, who played more than 500 games for Go Ahead , had to end his career. He started his own business with a heating and plumbing company. For six years he was also one of the people responsible for the A-youth of the Go Ahead Eagles , which produced, among others, Jan van Dijk and Henk Veldmate . In 1982 he and his club mate Dick Schneider initiated the Dr. Fadrhonc youth tournament, which has now become a well-known viewing tournament at the KNVB .

Butter died at the age of 76 in late December 2012.
