Alex Ploeg

Alex Ploeg (born March 29, 1956 in Velsen ; died July 17, 2014 near Hrabowe , Donetsk Oblast , Ukraine ) was a Dutch ichthyologist and lobbyist of the international ornamental fish trade .

Career

Alex Ploeg studied at the Utrecht University biology and a doctorate in 1983. In the following years he worked intensively with the genre crenicichla ( Crenicichla ) and wrote original descriptions of several species. In 1991 he defended his dissertation on this genus at the University of Amsterdam , a revision that contained fifteen initial descriptions. Of the more than ninety species of pike cichlid, almost twenty have been described by Ploeg, plus several synonyms .

From 1989 to 1991 Ploeg was curator of a show aquarium on Aruba and from 1991 to 1992 a fish farmer for ornamental fish on Bonaire . From 1993 to 2004 positions as manager at several companies in the ornamental fish trade followed. In 2004 he became general secretary of the international branch association of the ornamental fish industry . In 2006, he was Secretary General of the European Pet Organization and in 2009 he took on an advisory position at a Dutch industry association. In these positions, Ploeg was a lobbyist for the ornamental fish industry at national, European and international legislators and authorities. He represented the interests of his branch, which is subject to increasing restrictions in the fields of animal welfare and species protection .

On July 17, 2014, Alex Ploeg, his wife Edith, their son Robert and his friend Robin died when the Malaysia Airlines flight 17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine . The couple left two daughters.
