Adrianus Zwart
Adrianus Johannes Zwart (also Arie Zwart , Aad Zwart and AJ Zwart Rijswijk, born August 30, 1903 in Rijswijk , † August 27, 1981 in Laren ) was a Dutch painter and one of the last representatives of the Hague School in his early work .
Life
Adrianus Zwart first studied with Otto Kriens, his first pictures date back to 1915. In 1918 and 1919 he studied at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten . Considering that Zwart could not yet make a living from painting, he also worked as a graphic designer in an advertising agency in Amsterdam . From 1926 he was able to devote himself completely to painting and traveled to the Netherlands, from 1933 he owned a car and a trailer which he used for these activities. After the birth of his third child in 1935, he became too small and in 1936 he decided to move into an old barge that he had converted into a houseboat and studio. He used the mobility of the boat to change the berth and to paint there. Including in Gorinchem , Nijmegen , Arnhem , the IJssel and Hattem , as well as the Meuse as far as Namur . He mostly spent the winter in Meppel .
From 1949 he permanently cast the barge in Voorburg and now mainly traveled abroad. In 1962 he moored the barge on the Singel canal in Woerden , where he lived with his family. Adrianus Zwart had three children. From 1974 he lived in the Künstlerhaus Rosa Spier Huis until his death , where he died in 1981.
In Germany, Adrianus Zwart's works were shown by the Wissing Gallery in Bocholt.
plant
Adrianus Zwart belonged to the Hague School and was a typical representative of Dutch painting in his Rijswijk era, as it existed until the middle of the 20th century. Not only the painting style, but also the motifs of rural life in the Netherlands were dwindling, so that the interiors shown in kitchens, living rooms and stables are likely to have been among the last. When it comes to landscapes, however, Zwart was more of a representative of French plein air painting , which continued in his extensive travels abroad. While Zwart had already added color accents to the muted dark colors, the Dutch color scheme has given way completely to a strong color scheme.
