Klaas Cornelis Hendrik Balk (born December 27, 1948 in Badhoevedorp ) is a former Dutch cyclist .
Athletic career
Klaas Balk became Dutch champion on the track four times : in 1967, 1969 and 1970 in the 1000-meter time trial and in 1972 in the tandem race , together with Peter van Doorn . In 1969 he finished third in the time trial at the World Track Championships in Brno .
In 1968 and 1972 Balk competed at the Olympic Games. In 1972, at the Olympic Games in Munich , he finished fourth in the sprint . He then became a professional racing driver for three years. During this time he also drove successfully road races . In 1971 and 1972 he won a stage of the Olympia's Tour . In 1973 he became vice European champion in two-man team driving , together with René Pijnen .
In 1975, Klaas Balk had to end his cycling career after being hit by a car and suffering numerous injuries.
After the sport
In 1976, in the presence of his racing colleague Jan Janssen , Klaas Balk opened the Balk Rijwielen bicycle shop in Nieuw-Vennep , which he ran until 2005. He initiated a regional training center for young racing cyclists, which he also trained. Horses are one of his hobbies and he is involved in therapeutic riding .
