history
In the Middle Ages there were several lakes in the region, which grew together around 1500 due to peat extraction and poor dykes and formed the Haarlemmermeer, then the largest lake in the Netherlands. In 1836 two huge storms drove the water to the gates of Amsterdam and Leiden . It was decided to drain it. The ring canal and the ring dike were built between 1840 and 1845 . In 1847 and 1848 several pumping stations were built, including the neo-Gothic station with eight pumps in Lijnden. Baron van Lynden van Hemmen was named after the pumping station in the northeast of the polder . The pumps began to work in 1849, and in 1852 the Haarlemmermeer was drained. In the following year the sale and settlement of the newly reclaimed land began.
