Gerhard Wilhelm Kernkamp (born November 20, 1864 in Hoorn ; † October 9, 1943 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch historian.

Life

Gerhard Wilhelm was the son of the cloth maker Johann Hermann Bernhard Kernkamp (* March 8, 1825 in Menslage; † January 5, 1911 in Hoorn) and his wife Geertruida Kuneman, who was married on January 10, 1858 in Alkmaar (* January 13, 1834 in Alkmaar; † May 28, 1915 in Haarlem). After attending primary school as well as the high school in his hometown, he attended high schools in Haarlem and Utrecht. In 1882 he began to study history at the University of Utrecht , completed his doctoral examination in 1888 and became a teacher at the Utrecht grammar school and the higher civic school there. In 1890 he received his doctorate under Johan Adam Wijnne with the work De sleutels van de Sont. On June 12, 1901, he was appointed professor of history at the University of Amsterdam , which task he took on on September 30, 1901 with the introductory speech Over de materialistische opvatting van de geschiedenis (German: About the materialist conception of history ). On June 20, 1903, he received an appointment as professor of history at the University of Utrecht, which office he began on October 19, 1903 with the inaugural speech Van Wagenaar tot Fruin (German: From Wagenaar to Fruin ).

Kernkamp's research dealt primarily with Dutch economic, social and university history. As one of the first Dutch professors, he gave lectures on archive research and placed great emphasis on archival research for his students.

Politically, Kernkamp was on the left without really being active in a social movement. His convictions cost him an appointment to the professorship of history at the University of Groningen in 1894 .

In addition, he received an extraordinary professorship at the Dutch Commercial College in Rotterdam in 1913 , in 1915 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and in 1927 he was awarded the Knightly Order of the Dutch Lion . In addition, Kernkamp took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in the academy year 1918/19 .

Numerous articles by him have been published in the specialist journals and journals of his time. From 1905 to 1930 he was editor of the magazine Issues of Time and from 1920 to 1929 chief editor of De Groene Amsterdammer . In addition, from 1936 Kernkamp was involved in a committee of an alliance against the National Socialist aspirations of the Netherlands.

Kernkamp was married twice. His first marriage was on July 22, 1890 in Hoorn with Lutske van Dam (* March 6, 1867 in Terwispel; † June 14, 1949 in Wassenaar), the daughter of Uilke Hendriks van Dam (* around 1835 in Gorredijk) and his Mrs. Aukjen Bouwer (born February 13, 1835 in Opsterland, † January 18, 1901 in Kampen). There are two daughters from the marriage. After he divorced his first wife on August 10, 1907, he married Jitske Muijderman (born January 13, 1884 in Zutphen; † August 12, 1970 in Utrecht) on July 16, 1908, the daughter of the tobacco dealer Coert Daniel Muijderman ( * September 30, 1842 in Zutphen; † November 7, 1908 ibid) and his wife Jitske Dikema (* February 15, 1854 in Hoogezand; † January 30, 1884 in Zutphen).
