Johan Adam Wijnne (born December 4, 1822 in Hoogeveen , † August 1, 1899 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch historian.

Life

Johann Adam was the son of the physician Doctor Arend Johan Wijnne (born June 30, 1791 in Elburg; † April 16, 1837 in Groningen) and his wife Regina Catharina Secunda Nodell (born January 26, 1797 in Rotterdam; † October 29, 1878 in Groningen). At the age of fifteen he went to boarding school in Assen and enrolled on April 15, 1843 at the University of Groningen . His formative teachers were Jacques Adolphe Charles Rovers and Petrus van Limburg Brouwer (1795–1847). On June 3, 1848 he received his doctorate with the thesis Quaestiones criticae de belli Punici secundi parte priori to the doctorate of literature. In 1847 he became a teacher and in 1861 rector of the grammar school in Groningen.

On June 11, 1873 he was appointed professor of history and political geography at the University of Utrecht , which task he took up on September 29, 1873 with the introductory speech De moeielijkheid van 't opsporen der historical waarheid . As a university lecturer in Utrecht, he also took part in the university's organizational tasks and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1885/86 . He resigned this office with the speech De Utrechtsche hoogeschool in previous eeuwen . Wijnne made a name for himself primarily through his manuals on general and Dutch history, which appeared in several editions. He also published several articles in the specialist journals and magazines of his time.

In 1882 he became a knight of the Swedish North Star Order, in 1883 a knight of the Danish Order of Dannebrog and in 1886 a knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . In 1864 he became a member of the Society of Dutch Literature in Leiden , on March 6, 1866, an honorary member of the Historical Society in Utrecht, on May 16, 1882, a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and, in 1889, a foreign member of the Frisian Society for History, Antiquity and Linguistics ( Dutch: Friesch genootschap vor geschied-, oudheid- en taalkunde ) in Leeuwarden. On September 19, 1893 he retired from his professorship and received a pension of 2985 guilders for this purpose.

Wijnne married on July 11, 1849 te Noordbroek Ij (Y) da Cornelia Habbema (* December 10, 1828 in Leeuwarden; † October 30, 1898 in Utrecht), the daughter of the businessman Johannes Bokke Hermanus Habbema (* December 6, 1802 in Buitenpost ; † April 2, 1845 in Leeuwarden) and his wife Petronella Geertruida Hamerster (born November 23, 1802 in Leeuwarden; † August 1, 1843 in Leeuwarden). No children are known from the marriage.
